An old family friend was one of the founders of this one, which provides support and resources to keep seniors independently living in their homes for as long as possible, then transition into assisted living when and if needed. They do great work, and I'm sure they'd appreciate it if you slipped them a fiver.
Do you have any idea how many people we imprison in this country? Way too many! Do you have any idea how much help we give them to re-enter society afterwards? Way too little! Here's a local orginization which is working to change that. Their website isn't very good ('tis a shame), so no online donations, but if you contact them they are indeed a 501c3 who would be more than happy to relieve you of a fiver.
This guy is a former neighbor, and while he and I certainly don't always agree, he's a real good guy, and one of the few out there sticking up for things like the 4th Amendment in the digital age where any and every clown can climb aboard the world wide web and "surf away."
This friend of mine has a PhD in Educational Philosophy AND lives in an off the grid log cabin on the side of a mountain. She's wicked smart! She does great work in local, practical, actionable solutions to complex, gloabl, intractable problems like racism. Sadly, making the world a better place pays quite poorly, especially compared to making the world a worse place, so contact her and give her some money to support her work.
If it's good enough for Neil and Willy, it's goddamed good enough for you.
Shopping for the Christmas gift for the person who has everything? Buy someone they've never met their own goat(s)!
Or if people are just bumming you out in general, there's always these guys and/or the sea turtles. Sea turtles are amazing! They've been around since 100 million years before the last dinosaur went extinct, can hold their breath for five hours, dive 4,000 feet down, swim 10,000 miles a year, weigh 2,000 pounds, and live to be 200 years old. They're cool as hell, so give some money to help a very few people protect them from many, many other people.
